We have some NL Central action on tap Friday, as the Chicago Cubs take on the Cincinnati Reds to kick off a 3-game series.
The Chicago Cubs come into this one looking to build off of back-to-back wins to close out their set with Milwaukee, culminating with a 7-4 come from behind win on Wednesday. Addison Russell led the charge, going 2 for 4 with 4 RBI including the game-winning 3-run home run in the bottom of the 9th to complete the comeback. Albert Almora Jr. went 1 for 4 with a solo home run, while Kris Bryant and Wilson Contreras did the rest of the damage offensively for the Cubs. Matt Szczur went 1 for 3 and Miguel Montero added a pinch-hit single, while Anthony Rizzo chipped in a base hit as well in the winning effort for the Cubbies. Kyle Hendricks threw 5 innings, giving up all 4 runs on 4 hits while striking out 4, ultimately not becoming a factor in the decision. Wade Davis became the pitcher of record and threw a scoreless 9th inning to improve to 2-0 this season. Jon Lester gets the nod in game 1, and is 0-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 17 strikeouts this season. In his career, Lester is 3-1 with a 3.32 ERA and 51 strikeouts against Cincinnati.

The Cincinnati Reds will be looking to rebound after dropping 5 of their last 7 games, including a 2-1 extra innings defeat at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday. The Reds mustered up only 2 hits as a team on Thursday as Baltimore starter Wade Miley was simply in the zone. Joey Votto went 1 for 4 with a solo homer and Zack Cozart put up his 3rd double of the season as part of a 1 for 3 night at the plate. Scott Feldman was very good on the mound in his own right, going 7 strong innings, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 4. Raisel Iglesias was solid in relief, striking out 5 of 6 batters faced over 2 innings, however Blake Wood took the loss after giving up the game-winning run in the 10th inning to fall to 0-2 this season. Tim Adleman gets the call in game 1, and is 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 5 strikeouts this season. In his career, Adleman is 1-0 with a 3.97 ERA and 9 strikeouts against the Cubs.
Chicago is 4-1 in their last 5 road games and 23-8 in Lester’s last 31 starts while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Cincinnati is 4-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record and 17-35 in their last 52 games against a left-handed starter while the over is 11-5 in their last 16 home games. Chicago is 8-1 in Lester’s last 9 starts against Cincinnati and are 13-3 in the last 16 meetings in Cincinnati.
Adleman was a decent option for the Reds’ rotation last season, but Cincy is sliding right now, and going up against Lester won’t help. The Cubs have found their offense and have had a load of success as a team when Lester takes on Cincinnati so I’ll lay the juice with the Cubs here.
