New York Giants 2017 Preview

TV:

The New York Giants hope to make the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2007-08. The Giants are coming off an 11-win season and hope to get the most out of these remaining years while Eli Manning is still on the field, as he did turn 36 years old in January. Maybe another season under coach Ben McAdoo can get both sides of the ball on the same page and produce a deep playoff run this season.

Can the Giants win their first playoff game since the 2011 season?

USA TODAY Sports

Here’s the New York Giants 2017 NFL preview.

Key Player Losses: Nobody has yet to sign the Giants leading rusher in Rashad Jennings, who is now 32 years old and fresh off a season in which he averaged 3.3 yards per carry. Fan favorite wide receiver Victor Cruz is also a free agent after hauling in just 62 receptions since 2014 and never being the same due to injuries. Linebacker Kelvin Sheppard is a free agent after just one season in New York and talented defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins is now with the Indianapolis Colts after four seasons with the Giants and 10 sacks. Kicker Robbie Gould is now a 49er after making all 10 of his kicks last season.

Key Player Additions: The Giants added wide receiver Brandon Marshall, which now gives them the most talented receiving core in the league when you pair him with Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard. D.J. Fluker will bolster the offensive line, as he's a terrific athlete and has 59 starts under his belt at just 26 years old. Running back Shaun Draughn makes his ninth stop, but he's a reliable player who can produce on the ground and through the air when given the chance as he showed last season. Cornerback Valentino Blake is a consistent tackler and has 23 career pass deflections. The Giants also signed backup quarterback Geno Smith for whatever that's worth.

Draft: Evan Engram is a tight end who plays like a wide receiver due to his size and route running ability. Engram is an instant upgrade at the position for the Giants and could start right away. Dalvin Tomlinson adds depth to the defensive line and is a monster when it comes to clogging up running lanes. Davis Webb is a nice project quarterback who has the size and arm strength that's intriguing and should develop more learning the ropes behind Eli Manning. Wayne Gallman is a big play running back with good hands and could earn the backup role immediately if he shines in training camp. Adam Bisnowaty is a versatile offensive lineman with a high IQ and Avery Moss is a defensive end who would have been drafted earlier if it weren't for off-the-field issues. The Giants touched on many areas in their draft and grabbed three players who can help big time their rookie seasons.

Outlook: The New York Giants had one of the top defenses in the league last season and return majority of the guys who made it happen. That side of the ball is in good hands. The concern with the Giants is Manning’s inconsistent play, as he had just 10 more touchdown passes than interceptions and wasn't given any favors due to a lousy rushing attack. Not sure if another season of Paul Perkins and Shane Vereen is good enough to take the pressure off an aging quarterback who is turnover prone. The receiving core is ridiculously talented and can put up points quickly. The Giants season for me simply comes down to whether this will be a season of good Eli or inconsistent Eli. The Giants have enough to make playoffs again, but I’m not touching these Super Bowl odds due to there being far better and more consistent teams in the NFC.
